The late businessman Sunjay Kapur, who tragically passed away on June 12, 2025, after a heart attack at the age of 53, would have turned 54 on Wednesday. Marking the solemn occasion, his third wife, former actor and businesswoman Priya Sachdev Kapur, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, even as a bitter legal dispute over Kapur’s reportedly enormous Rs 30,000 crore estate rages on.
The ongoing feud pits Priya Sachdev Kapur against Kapur’s children from his second marriage to former actor Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, who have challenged the validity of their father’s will.
A Message of Love and Purpose
Priya Sachdev Kapur’s birthday post for her late husband was deeply personal and philosophical. She quoted a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita (3.21, 9.31, 9.29), emphasising a life lived with purpose, love, and selfless devotion:
“Whatever action a great man performs, others follow. Whatever path he walks, the world pursues. He who lives with purpose and love never perishes, For the divine dwells in all who serve with devotion.”
In her heartfelt caption, she celebrated Sunjay Kapur’s character, portraying him as a man who “led with kindness, not command,” “built with courage, not pride,” and whose greatest act was how he “loved, selflessly and completely.”
The post continued to suggest that his presence remains a “quiet strength,” felt “in the laughter of our son” and “in the walls you built with vision.” Concluding with the poignant belief that “Some souls don’t depart; they expand. You are everywhere, yet still right here,” she signed off, “Happy Birthday, J.”
The tribute featured a montage of family memories, showcasing the couple on holidays, celebrating events, and participating in family functions. The video visibly included Samaira and Kiaan, Sunjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor, alongside Priya’s daughter Safira from her previous marriage, presenting a united family front.
The video also included a powerful voiceover from Sunjay Kapur himself, in which he spoke about his legacy: “I am a father, I am a husband, a friend, a son. I’m here to protect my family and I’m here to make sure I pass on the right values to my children and to my family, and to continue to uphold the vision for growth, honesty, trust, and love and respect.”
The $30,000 Crore Estate Feud
The heartfelt tribute arrives amidst the high-stakes legal battle over Kapur’s vast estate. Sunjay Kapur was previously married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani, followed by a high-profile marriage and subsequent divorce from Karisma Kapoor, with whom he shares daughter Samaira (20) and son Kiaan (15). He married Priya Sachdev a year after his divorce from Kapoor was finalised, and they have a six-year-old son, Azarias.
Samaira and Kiaan have formally challenged their father’s will, alleging it to be “forged.” Representing the children, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani argued in court that the contested will was manufactured to “disinherit” the children from the previous marriage. Jethmalani further claimed that even Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, was sidelined in the document, asserting that “Only Priya Kapur profits from this forged will.” The legal challenge also pointed to what were claimed to be “discrepancies” in the will’s language, including the reportedly improper use of feminine pronouns to describe Sunjay Kapur.
Priya Sachdev Kapur’s eloquent and public declaration of her late husband’s noble character and devotion comes across as not just a birthday wish, but a firm statement of her position and bond with Sunjay Kapur amidst the very public and acrimonious legal battle surrounding his enormous wealth.
